Shillong, Dec 26: The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday condemned reported attempts to disrupt Christmas celebrations in parts of the country and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.

State BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said every citizen has a constitutional right to celebrate festivals freely and without fear. He described Christmas as a festival symbolising love, harmony and unity, observed across communities in India.

In a statement, Kharkrang said incidents aimed at disrupting Christmas go against the values of Indian civilisation and undermine the spirit of mutual respect. He added that such acts should not be tolerated and those involved must face the strictest punishment under the law.

Kharkrang also said the BJP remains committed to religious unity and equality and will continue to uphold constitutional values. He rejected attempts to portray isolated incidents involving individuals as organised actions for political purposes.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in Christmas programmes, Kharkrang said it reflects inclusivity and respect for all faiths. He added that the Meghalaya BJP stands in solidarity with people across the country and has urged swift arrests and speedy trials.

According to him, party leaders in Meghalaya are in touch with BJP units in other states, including Assam, to ensure that those responsible for the incidents are brought to justice.
