Meghalaya BJP spokesperson M. Kharkrang on Thursday termed the Women’s Reservation Act, or Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, a major step towards women’s empowerment, and said the party is considering a 33 per cent quota for women in candidate selection for the 2028 Assembly elections.
He said the State unit is aligning its strategy with the broader national policy aimed at increasing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
Kharkrang clarified that the proposed quota will not apply to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections, which were postponed due to unrest.
He added that the reservation policy will be implemented only after the legislation is passed and the constituency delimitation process is completed, following which the quota will come into effect.
