A BJP delegation from Meghalaya, led by Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai and State President Rikman G Momin, met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to seek early resolution on relocating the Dalit Sikh community from Them lew Mawlong to the Shillong Cantonment area.
Shullai, representing the Shillong Cantonment (Shillong West) constituency, described the matter as sensitive and urged the Ministry to find an amicable solution in the broader interest of the state. The delegation also requested swift enforcement of the Cantonment Board’s new building bye-laws, renewal of policies for the area, and approval for defence land acquisition required to complete the Shillong flyover project.
Rajnath Singh assured the leaders that their concerns would be reviewed and forwarded to the relevant authorities. Shullai said the delegation plans to follow up on the issues soon.
In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Meghalaya’s Statehood Day with a letter acknowledging the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia communities for preserving cultural identity, promoting environmental stewardship, fostering social harmony, and empowering women. He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the “Act East” policy.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed gratitude for Modi’s wishes and appreciated the Centre’s support in Meghalaya’s development initiatives.
