Agartala, November 27, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday launched a sharp, indirect attack on the Centre, alleging that divisive politics has created major challenges for tribal communities across the North-East.

Speaking at a large public gathering organised by the Tipra Motha at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala, Sangma said that tribes in the region have long been kept apart, leading to the issues they face today.

Sangma said that the cultural identity of various tribes has survived because ancestors fought with unity and courage. “Their struggle helped us progress in several areas. But today the biggest challenge in the North-East is division, which is weakening our collective strength,” he told the crowd.

Stressing the need for a unified platform, he said the objective of the ‘One North East’ initiative is to bring all tribes together to jointly secure their rights. “If we remain divided, our voice gets suppressed. Without unity, our demands lose significance,” he said.

Sangma clarified that the movement is not aimed against any individual or party. Instead, he described it as an effort to build solidarity among tribal groups and push for long-awaited change. “We are not targeting anyone. This is a movement to unite. Through One North East, we seek to achieve the transformation people have been waiting for,” he added.

Without explicitly naming the Centre, he alleged that the “politics of division” has weakened tribal communities and widened distances between different groups. “Our unity is our greatest strength. A strong society and nation can be built only through unity,” he said, urging people to come together under the new platform.

Sangma expressed confidence that the One North East initiative would play a significant role in driving development in the region and advancing the rights and welfare of tribal communities in the days ahead.
