Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the new building of Bishop Mama Memorial School at Saltopgre, an institution that has significantly contributed to the educational development of the area.
Speaking at the event, CM Sangma paid tribute to Late Bishop George Mamalassery, popularly known as Bishop Mama, calling him a visionary reformer of the Garo Hills and a driving force behind multiple educational initiatives in the region. He said the school stands as a testament to Bishop Mama’s belief in education as a powerful instrument of change.
Bishop Mama’s contributions include establishing over 57 Lower Primary Schools, 35 M.E. Schools, and 16 Secondary Schools in the Garo Hills. He also played a key role in bringing the Salesians to set up Don Bosco College in Tura and the Jesuits to establish Loyola College in Williamnagar, ensuring quality education for the youth of the region.
CM Sangma urged students to take inspiration from Bishop Mama’s dedication and vision, emphasizing the importance of striving not only for personal success but also for meaningful contributions to the community and the state.
