Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss concerns regarding the proposed FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) Amendment Bill.

The delegation included representatives from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), including Anthony Cardinal Poola, President of CBCI, and Most Rev Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Secretary General of CBCI.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the significant role played by educational, healthcare, and social service institutions supported through foreign contributions, particularly in remote and tribal areas of Meghalaya and the Northeast. Concerns raised by Christian organisations regarding provisions related to seizure of properties under the proposed amendments were also conveyed.

Chief Minister Sangma appreciated Minister Rijiju’s assurance that wider consultations with stakeholders would take place before any amendments are finalised. He emphasized the need for safeguards to ensure continuity of essential services while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to constructive engagement in the interest of communities across Meghalaya and the Northeast.
