Shillong, Nov 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to intervene and help resolve the ongoing student protests at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. The protests, which have disrupted university activities for five days, are centered around demands for the removal of the registrar, deputy registrar, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.
In a post on social media platform X, Sangma stated that he had briefed Pradhan on the situation and called for a timely resolution to the crisis. Faculty members of NEHU have also raised the issue with Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, who is the university’s chief rector. The Governor has expressed concern over the unrest and directed stakeholders to submit proposals for resolving the situation.
Vice-Chancellor Shukla, despite efforts to convene an Executive Committee meeting, has been unable to proceed due to the ongoing protests. However, he assured that the meeting would take place by November 11, and actions would follow based on the inquiry report. He also confirmed the appointment of Pro-Vice-Chancellors for both the Tura and Shillong campuses by the end of the month.
