Congress MP from Tura, Saleng A Sangma, has urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the ongoing crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya. In a letter to the President, Sangma requested a comprehensive review of the grievances of students and faculty members, including potential replacement of the current Vice-Chancellor to restore the university’s integrity.

Sangma highlighted issues raised by the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA), including the appointment of underqualified individuals to critical administrative positions, bias against indigenous representation, and disorganized handling of national examinations. He also emphasized shortcomings in research, infrastructure, and student welfare, such as inadequate hostel facilities, unclean water supply, and outdated library resources.

The MP accused the Vice-Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla, of violating university governance norms and frequent absences, resulting in administrative delays and undermining trust in NEHU’s leadership. The Congress previously accused the RSS and BJP in Meghalaya of attempting to “capture” NEHU by appointing affiliates to key positions.

Sangma’s letter seeks the President’s immediate intervention to address these issues and restore NEHU’s academic and administrative integrity.
