Shillong, March 13: Authorities in Meghalaya have partially eased curfew in the violence-affected West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills districts, allowing residents limited time to purchase essential goods.

In West Garo Hills, the curfew relaxation is effective for four hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while East Garo Hills residents can access essential services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as ordered by Deputy Commissioner RP Marak.

The move follows violent clashes earlier this week between tribal and non-tribal groups during the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. Police firing resulted in two deaths, and incidents of arson, vandalism, and looting were reported in Tura town. In response, the Army was deployed and the state government postponed the April 10 elections.

Authorities described the current situation as tense but under control, with security forces maintaining a high alert. Residents have been urged to remain peaceful during the curfew relaxation, and law enforcement warned of strict action against any violations.
