Shillong, May 29: East Khasi Hills Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Jorhat, Assam, in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a schoolgirl in Shillong, following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media.

The accused, identified as Himan Gogol, was apprehended during a joint interstate operation after the video went viral on May 24. The footage showed a masked man lifting the skirt of a schoolgirl and taking photographs, leading to widespread public outrage.

Acting swiftly, police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 26 under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations), East Khasi Hills. Investigators confirmed that the incident occurred at around 6:35 AM on May 23 at Umsohsun, along the lane leading to the YWCA in Shillong.

The victim was identified and provided necessary support. An FIR was registered at Lumdiengjri Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Authorities have assured that further legal action is being taken and the investigation is ongoing.
