A consignment of 10 metric tonnes (MT) of black pepper cultivated in South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was shipped to Mumbai on June 3. The produce was sent from Chapahati Prime Hub by the Kerupara and Dingampara Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS) under the Zikzak block to Sundardas Ratansey Spice Pvt Ltd.
The initiative was facilitated by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) under the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project (M-LAMP). Of the total quantity, Kerupara IVCS contributed 6,600 kg at ₹640 per kg, while Dingampara IVCS supplied 3,400 kg at ₹610 per kg, based on quality grading.
This marks the second major black pepper consignment from the district, following a shipment of around 11 MT by Dimiligre IVCS in 2023.
The export was coordinated by the district administration and MBDA, with support from the Ambeng Farmers and Producers Association. According to MBDA officials, the black pepper has been procured by Everest Masala and Everest Food Products.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, in a social media post, welcomed the development, noting that the growing demand for organic spices from Meghalaya is creating new market opportunities for local farmers.
