Shillong, Nov 20: Former South Tura MLA John Leslee K. Sangma has rejoined the Congress following a short association with the United Democratic Party (UDP). The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) said Sangma made the decision after discussions with community elders, supporters, and civil society leaders from the Garo Hills.
The MPCC noted that his return comes amid growing concerns in the region over unemployment, youth disenchantment, and governance issues under the BJP-NPP coalition government. Sangma, known for his strong grassroots presence and advocacy on Garo Hills issues, expressed concern over the area’s worsening socio-economic situation.
“Our young people are struggling. Opportunities are shrinking, and we must work harder at the grassroots,” he told party members.
Welcoming Sangma’s return, MPCC president Vincent H. Pala said his comeback sends a strong message to the ruling coalition. “His credibility and deep connection with the people will help strengthen democratic politics in the Garo Hills. The growing support for the Congress is evident,” Pala said.
