Shillong, Aug 10: In a significant development, the Union Finance Ministry has sanctioned ₹2,000 crore for Meghalaya to upgrade its roads and logistics infrastructure under the second phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP).
The funding was approved following a meeting between Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on June 24, where the Chief Minister presented a strong case for the project and sought additional financial support.
The first phase of MITP, supported by the World Bank with ₹880 crore, has been successfully implemented, paving the way for the second phase. The State Government has expressed gratitude to the Ministry for considering the Chief Minister’s request and sanctioning the funds.
The MITP aims to improve Meghalaya’s transport infrastructure, including roads and logistics, and is being implemented in phases. The sanctioned amount will give a significant boost to the state’s efforts to enhance its connectivity and economic growth.
