Shillong, Jan 21: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to inclusive and balanced development in Meghalaya, highlighting the sustained focus on South Garo Hills over the past seven years.

Addressing development initiatives in the district, the Chief Minister noted that he has visited Baghmara and South Garo Hills multiple times in the past eight years to review progress and initiate key projects aimed at addressing long-standing gaps in infrastructure and public services.

He highlighted that for over 23 years, South Garo Hills lacked a dedicated Deputy Commissioner’s office and operated from a sub-division office. The construction of a new DC office building is now underway, and the Government is actively working to address the requirement for staff quarters.

The Chief Minister also pointed out the poor condition of Captain Williamson Sangma College infrastructure, which is now being improved with a new building under construction.

Announcing a major development in the district, he said the Phase II Baghmara Water Supply Project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹140 crore. The project, delayed earlier, has now received clearance and funding from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

On connectivity, the Chief Minister informed that the Darugre-Baghmara via Siju up to Dalu road project, estimated at ₹4,000 crore, is moving towards final approval. Land acquisition for the project is complete, and the proposal is awaiting consideration by the Ministry of Finance.

Emphasising that transformation is gradual, he stated that the MDA Government has been systematically working to reverse decades of neglect. The ongoing initiatives in South Garo Hills demonstrate the Government’s intent to ensure equitable development and improve the quality of life in the district.
