The Meghalaya High Court has allowed a pilgrimage to the sacred Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram, East Khasi Hills district, subject to strict conditions aimed at maintaining peace, order, and respect for local sentiments.
Justice H S Thangkhiew passed the order on Friday after hearing a petition seeking to facilitate the pilgrimage. All parties involved agreed on safeguards to ensure a peaceful and orderly event.
The court ruled that no religious rituals or pujas are to be performed inside the cave, and no ritual items should be brought. Only a symbolic sprinkling of water on the sacred stone within the cave is permitted, with any excessive pouring prohibited.
District authorities have been directed to supervise the pilgrimage and ensure orderly conduct. Organisers are required to arrange private security or volunteers to manage crowd control and traffic.
The court emphasized that the pilgrimage should be solemn and respectful, avoiding traffic disruption and littering.
The Dorbar Shnong of Mawsynram Village has submitted an undertaking supporting the pilgrimage under these conditions.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 31, by which time the date of the pilgrimage will be communicated to district officials.
