The Meghalaya Police on Tuesday carried out a crime scene reconstruction in connection with the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a tourist from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who was killed during his honeymoon visit to Sohra. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducted the reconstruction in the presence of the accused, including Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and three others.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the reconstruction helped establish a “very clear picture” of the sequence of events. The SIT visited several key locations, including the parking area and the viewpoint where the murder took place.
According to investigators, Raja was attacked with machetes in a planned sequence—first by Vishal Singh Chauhan, then by Anand, and finally by Akash Rajput. One of the weapons used is still missing, and efforts are ongoing by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to locate it.
Police confirmed that Raja’s mobile phone was deliberately destroyed—first by Sonam and later by Vishal—to eliminate evidence. “Sonam has confessed to her role and revealed her exact position during the incident. The murder was pre-planned,” SP Syiem said. After the attack, the accused allegedly threw Raja’s body into a gorge.
Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge near Sohra on June 2. The couple had initially been reported missing, and Sonam was later found at a roadside eatery along the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway.
Five individuals have been arrested in the case: Sonam Raghuvanshi, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and Anand.
