Meghalaya has issued a public health advisory following suspected meningococcal infection cases reported at an Army training centre in Shillong, where two Agniveer trainees have died, officials said on Friday.
Health authorities have initiated contact tracing, isolation of exposed individuals and fumigation of affected areas as part of containment measures. Surveillance has also been intensified in institutions and communities considered at risk, while officials maintained that the situation remains under control and there is no cause for panic.
According to a statement issued by the Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Department on Thursday, the State Surveillance Unit was alerted immediately, triggering an active epidemiological investigation. Commissioner and Secretary Joram Beda said the District Surveillance Unit in East Khasi Hills is coordinating with the state team to conduct case investigations, laboratory reviews, contact tracing and strengthened disease monitoring.
Officials stated that no additional cases have been detected outside the training centre so far, and standard outbreak response protocols remain in place.
The department has advised people to wear masks if unwell or while in crowded spaces, maintain respiratory hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, avoid congestion, practise regular handwashing and maintain proper nutrition to support immunity.
Residents have been urged to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, vomiting, purpuric rash, cold extremities or signs of shock appear. Authorities also appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information and announced the 14410 helpline for emergency assistance.
