Textile designer Ilamon Thangkhiew of Meghalaya has been named one of the 12 highlights at Heimtextil 2026 by Interior Design Magazine. The London and India-based designer, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, showcased her work through the New Talents program at the international textile trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany.
She was also featured as one of the 8 ‘Women in Design’ globally by New Designers magazine, spotlighting women whose work is pushing the boundaries of the industry. Their design practices blend experimentation with heritage, using materials like glass, salt and metal to create organic forms.
Born in Shillong and currently based in London, Thangkhiew’s designs are primarily rooted in Khasi culture and traditions. Her practice focuses on storytelling, heritage and the natural world, creating handwoven textiles and surface designs using natural materials such as ramie, cotton, silk, and bamboo. She collaborates with artisans from Meghalaya, India, to preserve traditional weaving techniques while integrating contemporary design elements.
Commenting on her recognition, Thangkhiew said it was “incredibly motivating” and an encouragement for her to continue developing her ideas and practice. She described Heimtextil as an opportunity to connect with other designers and explore a diverse range of materials and approaches in the textile industry.
She was selected for the curated ‘New Designers Select’ show after being invited to apply in the previous year. Thangkhiew has previously exhibited her work in Germany and the UK and has received awards including the Prime Awards in Shillong (2021) and the House of Directory Award in London (2025).
