The Meghalaya government has issued new safety guidelines for trekkers in East Khasi Hills district, making it mandatory for tourists to hire authorised and recognised guides. The decision follows the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a tourist from Madhya Pradesh, near Wei Sawdong falls.
Announced by the deputy commissioner and chairperson of the District Tourism Promotion Society, the move aims to enhance the safety of visitors and prevent similar incidents in the future.
East Khasi Hills, a popular destination in Meghalaya, saw a decline in tourist footfall following the incident. Local tourism stakeholders have welcomed the new rules, calling them a crucial step to restore confidence among travellers.
