Meghalaya will host the 39th National Games in 2027, following a review meeting between Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha. The video conference, held on Wednesday, focused on the state’s preparations, particularly in developing sports infrastructure.
During the meeting, Sangma highlighted key upgrades to sports facilities, including the JN Sports Complex in Shillong, Wahijher Stadium in Jaintia Hills, and the P.A. Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura. These projects are part of Meghalaya’s broader initiative to boost sports development across the state.
The Chief Minister also pointed to the state’s successful history in organizing major sporting events, such as the North East Games in 2022, South Asian Games in 2016, and the Meghalaya Games, demonstrating its capability to host large-scale events.
Dr. D. Vijay Kumar, Commissioner of Sports and Youth Affairs, confirmed that Shillong will be the main host city for the 39th National Games, following an agreement with the IOA in 2018. Tura and Jowai will also host various sporting disciplines during the event.
P.T. Usha expressed confidence in Meghalaya’s readiness to organize the Games, praising the state’s continuous efforts to strengthen its sports infrastructure and culture.
The 2027 National Games will be a significant milestone for Meghalaya, supporting its goal of becoming a premier sports hub in Northeast India. A formal announcement regarding the host confirmation is expected shortly.
