Shillong, Aug 28: Meghalaya’s Information and Public Relations Minister, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, revealed on Tuesday that the state government plans to roll out the Meghalaya Journalist Welfare Scheme 2024. This new scheme is set to replace the outdated Journalist Welfare Scheme 2009, which had limited funding provisions.
Currently, the 2009 scheme provides Rs. 1 lakh to the family of a deceased journalist and between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 1 lakh for medical treatment. The proposed 2024 scheme will significantly increase these amounts, offering Rs. 35 lakh for death benefits—an increase of 500 percent—and Rs. 3 lakh for medical expenses.
Lyngdoh also mentioned potential improvements, including cashless treatment options and encouraging journalists to register with the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce a pension scheme for retired journalists, similar to those in neighbouring Assam.
