Shillong, July 11: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the North East Roundtable under the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) in Shillong on Thursday, as part of her four-day official visit to Meghalaya.

Joined by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Sitharaman interacted with interns, industry leaders, and officials from various Northeastern states. The session focused on assessing the progress of the PMIS, which aims to provide structured internship opportunities for youth, especially from remote areas, to enhance their employability and workplace skills.

Interns shared their experiences, highlighting personal and professional growth through the scheme. Khlainkupar Lyngkhoi, an intern from East Khasi Hills, spoke about gaining time management skills and workplace confidence during his internship.

Sitharaman emphasized the scheme’s objective of supporting first-time interns. “This scheme was envisioned to support those who have never had a job assignment or internship, enabling them to acquire vital skills and exposure,” she said. She also encouraged the interns to explore entrepreneurial opportunities and act as “brand ambassadors” for the initiative.

The Minister underscored the importance of mentorship in career development, especially on the occasion of Guru Purnima, and assured continued government support for the scheme.

Earlier in the day, Sitharaman inaugurated the Polo Shopping Complex, Shillong’s first modern mall developed under the Smart Cities Mission. Built at a cost of ₹100.33 crore, the project covers 1.26 acres and features eco-friendly components like rooftop solar panels and rainwater harvesting.

Sitharaman is scheduled to continue her visit over the next three days, reviewing various central schemes and interacting with stakeholders across the state.
