Agartala, June 10, 2026: A delegation led by Tripura’s Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss key issues concerning the development and expansion of higher education in Tripura. Senior officials from the State Higher Education Department and the Ministry of Education were also present during the meeting.

The delegation raised concerns regarding affiliation-related issues of newly established Government General Degree Colleges under Maharaja Bir Bikram University and sought early resolution to ensure smooth academic administration and wider access to quality higher education. The State also requested the nomination of a Ministry representative to the Search Committee for appointing the Chairman of the State Higher Education Council.

Discussions focused on introducing and expanding skill and vocational courses in government colleges in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur to enhance employability and align education with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The delegation also urged the Centre to expedite the appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor for Tripura University, to which the Union Minister assured an early appointment.

The State further sought financial assistance for two new universities and four new degree colleges. The Union Minister appreciated Tripura’s initiatives and announced the formation of a high-level committee to prepare a roadmap for higher education development, aiming to increase enrolment, promote inclusive education, and transform Tripura into an educational hub by 2047.
