Teseng M Sangma, a district agriculture officer posted in Ampati, was found dead near Pelga Falls in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district on Wednesday. He had gone missing on Sunday evening after being swept away by strong currents in the Ganol River.
According to officials, Sangma was picnicking near the river when he attempted to cross it. Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the river was in spate, and he was carried away by the swift current.
A joint search operation involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Special Response Team (SRT), police personnel, and local volunteers was launched shortly after the incident. His body was recovered downstream near Pelga Falls after three days of intensive efforts.
