Muanpuii Saiawi, a 2005-batch Indian Foreign Service officer currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to New Zealand. She is expected to assume her duties shortly, according to an official statement from the MEA.
India and New Zealand have maintained warm bilateral ties since 1952, strengthened by shared Commonwealth membership, common law traditions, and a mutual commitment to democratic governance and economic cooperation. People-to-people relations have been further bolstered through tourism and sports, particularly cricket, hockey, and mountaineering.
New Zealand has highlighted India as a priority through initiatives such as the 2011 “Opening Doors to India”, the NZ Inc. India Strategy, and the 2020 “India-NZ 2025” paper, aimed at building a long-term strategic partnership.
Recent high-level interactions between the two countries include Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Laos on October 11, 2024, and their phone call in July 2024. President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to New Zealand from August 7-9, 2024, also advanced bilateral cooperation through meetings with the Governor-General, PM Luxon, and Deputy PM/Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
