Aizawl, Mar 9: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly will discuss a resolution on Monday seeking the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, officials from the assembly secretariat confirmed.

School Education Minister Vanlalthlana is scheduled to move the resolution following the question hour. The proposal aims to secure national recognition for Mizo, the common language of various Mizo tribes, by adding it to the list of 22 scheduled languages.

The resolution comes after discussions between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and the Eighth Schedule Study Group of the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB). In January, the group reported widespread support from organizations and ethnic Mizo communities across the state.

The group noted that a previous proposal had been submitted to the Centre but was not actively pursued. They recommended forming a new task force to resubmit the proposal in a comprehensive manner. Mizo has been Mizoram’s official language since 1974 and serves as a unifying language for Zo ethnic communities globally.
