Aizawl, May 29: The Mizoram Congress on Thursday called upon the state government to suspend the cess levied on petrol and diesel, arguing that the measure has compounded the financial strain on the public amid rising prices of essential commodities.
At a press conference, Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer Dr Lalmalsawma Nghaka said the steady escalation of global fuel prices, driven by tensions in West Asia, has severely affected consumers nationwide, including in Mizoram. He noted that the surge in fuel costs has sharply increased transportation expenses, which in turn has pushed up the prices of food items, daily necessities, delivery services, and public transport.
The opposition party maintained that the suspension of the fuel cess would provide immediate relief to households already struggling with inflation and urged the government to act without delay.
