Mizoram government employees have announced plans to go on mass casual leave on June 8 to press for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The decision was taken at a meeting of the Mizoram Movement for Old Pension Scheme (MIMOPS) on Wednesday, with leaders stating that the state government’s lack of progress on the issue had left them with no choice but to intensify their agitation.

MIMOPS, which represents employees covered under the New Pension Scheme (NPS), said it had been reluctant to confront the authorities but was compelled to act after years of unfulfilled demands. The organisation urged its members to extend full support to the protest, warning that disunity could weaken the movement in the future.

In a statement, MIMOPS stressed the need for solidarity, cautioning that without collective participation, sustaining the campaign would become increasingly difficult. The group also criticised the state government for failing to implement the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which the Centre introduced in April last year.

MIMOPS pointed out that states such as Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura, and Manipur had already extended the UPS to their employees, even without forming study committees, and accused Mizoram of lagging behind in addressing the concerns of its workforce.
