Aizawl, May 20: The Mizoram government held a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the implementation of demands raised by the Lalhmingthanga Sanate-led faction of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) under the Memorandum of Settlement signed last month. Officials said the discussions centered on accelerating development initiatives in Hmar-inhabited areas of the state.

The meeting, chaired by Home Minister K Sapdanga, was attended by senior officials including Adviser to the Chief Minister (Political) Lalmuanpuia Punte, the Home Secretary, officers from the Home Department, and personnel from CID (Special Branch). The charter of demands submitted by the HPC-D was examined, with proposals ranging from rehabilitation measures for surrendered cadres to development projects in northern and northeastern Mizoram.

Among the proposals were plans to improve road connectivity, establish educational institutions and government offices, provide support for farmers and land-based livelihoods, and promote agro-based industries. Officials noted that many of the demands required coordination across multiple departments, and it was decided that the concerned departments would be informed immediately to ensure prompt follow-up. Departments were also asked to submit progress reports for further review.

The meeting followed the peace accord signed on April 14 with the Sanate-led HPC(D), which was the last remaining insurgent group in Mizoram. On April 30, forty-three cadres, including Sanate himself, formally laid down arms during a homecoming ceremony at Sesawng near Aizawl, marking a significant step toward peace and development in the state.
