Aizawl, Dec 13: The Mizoram government plans to table the Mizoram Firecrackers (Regulation & Control) Bill, 2025 in the upcoming budget session of the state assembly to regulate the sale and use of firecrackers during the festive season, a senior official said on Friday.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on Thursday and chaired by Home Minister K. Sapdanga. The meeting was attended by senior government officials, police officers and representatives of civil society organisations. Participants agreed on restricting the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers, sky lanterns and other pyrotechnic materials across the state.

According to officials, directions will be issued to government employees, security forces, traders, members of the Young Mizo Association, church groups and online sellers through their respective organisations to ensure adherence to the proposed restrictions.

Mizoram has in the past enforced similar restrictions during Christmas and New Year celebrations, citing concerns related to pollution control and the observance of religious and cultural traditions.

Separately, as part of festive arrangements, the Aizawl district administration has declared a no-vehicle zone along a nearly three-kilometre stretch from Chanmari to Zodin Square, an area with major shopping centres. The restriction will be in place on December 23, 24 and 31 from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm.

The state government has also announced cash prizes for the best street decorations as part of efforts to enhance the festive appearance of the city.
