Aizawl, Aug 8: Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), visited Lunglei District on Friday, where he engaged with senior government officials, NGOs, church leaders, and ex-servicemen. During his visit, he also toured the 20 Assam Rifles Headquarters, interacted with personnel, and laid a wreath at the War Memorial to honour fallen soldiers.
Upon arrival at Kawmzawl Helipad, the Governor was received by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rochuangkimi Khenglawt and Superintendent of Police J. Lalmuankima. A Guard of Honour was presented by the 2nd Battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police, accompanied by a musical performance from the 2nd Battalion MAP English Medium School Pipe Band.
During a meeting with department heads at the DC’s Conference Hall, the Governor praised the effective implementation of welfare schemes in the district, calling them exemplary. He urged officials to prioritise the needs of marginalised communities with long-term solutions. Highlighting major central investments in education, including the establishment of Eklavya Model Residential Schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the state, he encouraged the public to utilise these institutions to prepare for Central Services and other top-level careers.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring that central welfare schemes for women, children, farmers, youth, and underprivileged groups are implemented effectively. Calling for inter-departmental collaboration, he emphasised strong law enforcement and combating substance abuse, urging churches and NGOs to support these efforts. He also underscored the need for alertness on issues related to neighbouring countries and regional developments, and called for public cooperation with authorities to maintain peace and order.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Rochuangkimi Khenglawt welcomed the Governor and provided a progress report on district initiatives. She highlighted the Healthy Lunglei District Campaign, which held 39 camps addressing non-communicable diseases, Project LEAP for supporting specially-abled persons, the Good Governance Campaign (Prashasan Gaon Ki Ore) implemented in six villages, Project BLOOM for maternal and child health in Lungsen block, and the Elementary English Literacy Programme.
Superintendent of Police J. Lalmuankima informed the Governor that 89 cases had been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 127 under local and special laws up to July this year. Thirteen heroin-related cases led to the seizure of 1,625.88 grams of heroin worth Rs 48.66 lakh. Two arms-related cases were also recorded.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Additional Deputy Commissioner Zoramdini.
Later, the Governor visited the 20 Assam Rifles Headquarters at Lunglawn, where Commandant Colonel Jaswinder Singh, SM, briefed him on their operations. He also met with representatives from NGOs, church leaders, and ex-servicemen at the Circuit House. The visit concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Chanmari War Memorial in honour of martyred soldiers.
