Aizawl, Jan 14: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh has extended Governor’s rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for six more months, citing ongoing political instability and frequent shifts in allegiance by council members.
The extension comes after five Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) members defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier this week. The ZPM, which had claimed a majority in the 20-member council, had requested the governor to conduct a floor test.
A notification from the state District Council and Minority Affairs Department stated that, while the council of ministers recommended a majority test, the governor justified the extension due to “frequent change of allegiance.” The decision is pending a report from an inquiry commission.
Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner has been appointed as caretaker to exercise CADC powers on the governor’s behalf, effective from January 7.
Governor’s rule was first imposed on July 7, 2025, following the removal of BJP leader Molin Kumar Chakma as Chief Executive Member (CEM) on June 16. Since then, the council has witnessed repeated leadership changes, as anti-defection laws do not apply. The CADC, with 24 seats (20 elected, four nominated), oversees the welfare of Mizoram’s Chakma tribal community.
