Aizawl, Nov 12: Mizoram has been honoured with a national award for outstanding traffic management at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference held in Gurugram, Haryana, officials said on Tuesday.
State Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau received the award from Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu during the event’s valedictory session.
The award recognises Mizoram’s innovative traffic management system, inter-departmental coordination, and the disciplined behaviour of its citizens that contribute to smooth vehicular movement. The Town and Country Planning Wing of the UD&PA Department represented the state and made a detailed presentation before the national jury on October 16, showcasing the state’s approach through a video and PowerPoint submission.
Aizawl, the state capital, has earned the nickname “Silent City” for maintaining road discipline without honking. Vehicles follow self-regulated rules — four-wheelers move on the left, two-wheelers on the right, and overtaking is avoided — ensuring orderly traffic flow even on narrow roads.
The state government dedicated the award to the people of Mizoram, acknowledging their civic sense and cooperation. The recognition adds to earlier praise from former President Ram Nath Kovind, who had commended the state’s unique traffic discipline.
