Aizawl, May 31: A devastating landslide struck Lawngtlai town in south Mizoram on Friday night, May 30, 2025, resulting in the collapse of five houses and a hotel. Several people, including nationals from Myanmar who were staying at the hotel, are feared trapped under the debris.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the border area of Bazar Veng and Chandmary localities in Lawngtlai. Rescue efforts are being led by the Central Young Lai Association (CYLA) Response Team, 3rd IR Battalion, Assam Rifles, and the District Disaster Management Team (DDMT), with local volunteers and community leaders joining the operation. Despite challenges due to unstable terrain and continued rainfall, teams resumed operations at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, focusing on clearing debris and locating missing persons.

Mizoram has been experiencing torrential rain since Friday, triggering landslides and rockfalls at several places. The rescue team is working tirelessly to locate and retrieve any survivors trapped beneath the rubble. The situation remains critical, with authorities urging residents to stay alert and cautious.
