Mizoram has launched the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) programme to strengthen sports coaching and talent development across the state. The initiative, introduced under the ‘Bana Kaih’ handholding scheme, was inaugurated on Monday by State Home Minister K Sapdanga.
The programme will provide basic coaching to children aged 8 to 15 years during a 15-day training period, with a long-term focus on preparing young athletes for future competitions, including the 2036 Olympics. A total of 24 sports disciplines have been selected, with priority given to those offering higher Olympic qualification prospects.
Implemented through a public-private partnership model, EMS aims to bring together community participation and government support to build sustained interest in sports. Officials described the programme as a significant step toward promoting and nurturing talented Mizo youth for international sporting platforms.
