Lawngtlai, Jan 20: A consultation meeting on issues related to illegal immigrants and unregulated trading activities in Lawngtlai district was held on Monday at the DC Conference Hall, Lawngtlai. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said the rising influx of illegal immigrants and unchecked trading activities in the district have become matters of concern. He informed that the Mizoram Home Department has issued instructions to take necessary measures to address the situation.
He stated that the issues require coordinated efforts involving the district administration, non-governmental organisations, village councils, police, and security forces, as they could have long-term implications for the district and the state. While referring to humanitarian aspects, he noted that delays in taking appropriate action could create further challenges in the future.
During the meeting, participants proposed holding an inter-district joint meeting and conducting surprise checks to identify undocumented illegal immigrants. It was also decided to constitute a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Drafting Committee under the chairmanship of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lawngtlai. The committee has been tasked with finalising the SOP by mid-February.
On matters related to trading and marketing, the Lai Autonomous District Council authorities were urged to extend cooperation to ensure the preparation of a comprehensive and effective SOP.
