Mizoram Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Minister Lalrinpuii has voiced concern over the sharp increase in crimes against women across the state, calling for immediate and collective action to tackle the issue.
Launching the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Solve Project at her office in Aizawl on Thursday, Lalrinpuii said the situation calls for an urgent and coordinated mechanism to protect women and ensure gender equality.
As per official figures, the state’s Women Helpline registered 3,094 cases of violence against women in 2022–23, which rose sharply to 12,750 cases by February this year. Lalrinpuii said empowering women is key to strengthening families and building a progressive society.
The GBV Solve Project, jointly initiated by ‘Aparajita’ and J-PAL South Asia, seeks to reduce gender-based violence, prevent sexual harassment, and promote equal opportunities. It will also create awareness among school students about gender sensitivity and offer skill training to women for livelihood support.
The Mission Foundation Movement (MFM) will implement the project in Mizoram in partnership with the state’s Women and Child Development Department. MFM is one of six organisations selected across India to carry out the initiative, which will first be introduced in Aizawl district.
