Mizoram marked a significant milestone in its transportation history as Sairang Railway Station received its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati. This development is expected to enhance vehicle availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long road transport, and benefit the state’s automobile sector, including dealers, service providers, and customers.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, spanning 51.38 km and featuring 45 tunnels, has played a crucial role in connecting Mizoram with the national rail network. The line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025, who also flagged off the Rajdhani Express between Sairang and Anand Vihar Terminal, the Mizoram Express to Guwahati, and an Express train to Kolkata, marking Mizoram’s full integration into India’s railway system.

Passenger response to the new train services has been positive, with high occupancy rates reported for all three trains: the Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express at 147%, the Sairang-Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115%, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express at 139%. Passengers have appreciated the convenience, cost-effectiveness, and significant time savings offered by the new services, which also improve access to education and healthcare in neighboring states.

Freight operations on the Bairabi-Sairang line commenced on 14 September 2025 with 21 cement wagons transported from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the railway has facilitated the movement of essential goods, including cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand, and stone chips. The first parcel consignment from Sairang, comprising Anthurium flowers, was sent to Anand Vihar Terminal on 19 September 2025. Between 17 September and 12 December 2025, a total of 17 rakes were handled, establishing the line as a reliable logistics corridor that lowers transport costs and supports Mizoram’s infrastructural and economic growth.
