Aizawl, March 23: Mizoram recorded 1,845 live births and 720 deaths in January 2026, according to data from the state’s Economics and Statistics Department.
The statistics showed a higher number of female births, with 949 girls compared to 896 boys. Among districts, Aizawl had the highest number of live births at 732, followed by Lunglei with 292 and Lawngtlai at 170. Of the total births, 1,127 occurred in urban areas and 718 in rural areas, alongside five stillbirths.
Deaths in January showed a higher male count, with 456 males and 264 females reported. Urban areas accounted for 479 deaths, while rural areas recorded 241. The report also recorded 15 infant deaths under one year and five deaths among children aged one to five.
For comparison, 2025 recorded 21,873 births in Mizoram, including 11,076 boys and 10,797 girls. Total deaths last year reached 8,080, with 5,183 males and 2,897 females a difference of 2,286 that continued into January 2026.
