Siaha, Dec 18 : A seminar on the possible social, cultural, and economic impacts of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) Road and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line was held today at the Seminar Hall, Government Siaha College. S. Lalremtuanga, Deputy Chief Executive Member (Dy. CEM), MADC, attended the programme as the Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, S. Lalremthanga stated that development always brings both positive and negative impacts, and therefore it is important not only to recognize the benefits but also to understand how to prevent or minimize adverse effects. He emphasized that the KMMTTP road will have a significant impact on Lai and Mara districts, and hence adequate preparedness is essential. As the project will bring large-scale economic activity, it is important to utilize its benefits wisely while taking responsibility to protect community life, culture, and ethnic identity.
He further cautioned that if the KMMTTP road and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line are not used properly, they could create serious challenges for many families. To avoid such situations, he stressed the need for coordinated efforts among the Government, Churches, NGOs, and the public. He highlighted that the youth will be particularly affected, and therefore proper guidance and education are essential so that future generations can gain real and positive benefits. He also urged people to listen carefully to experts regarding both positive and negative aspects, and called upon the participants and the people of Siaha to make every effort to ensure that these projects truly contribute to the development of the land and the people.
Abraham Beirazi Khithie, Additional Deputy Commissioner, delivered a talk on Awareness Campaigns, stating that similar seminars are being conducted in various districts. He noted that the KMMTTP road and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line will have a major impact across Mizoram, including significant effects on Siaha district. As large-scale economic activity is expected, he emphasized the need for advance preparation and mindset change so that the local people can benefit. He called upon MADC and NGOs to take the issue seriously, work together effectively, and make sincere efforts so that the people of Siaha gain real and lasting benefits.
Zomuana, Study Committee Member and Resource Person, delivered a detailed presentation and discussion on the various social, cultural, and economic impacts of the KMMTTP Road and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line. A productive question-and-answer session followed.
The programme was organized by the Committee to Study the Socio, Cultural and Economic Impact of the KMMTTP and the Railway Line from Bairabi to Sairang, Government of Mizoram, in association with the District Administration, Siaha, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Government Siaha College. Officials and NGOs from across Siaha District participated actively. Femina Hlychho, Associate Professor, Government Siaha College, delivered the welcome address, and Zorinsangi, SDC, proposed the vote of thanks, bringing the programme to a close.
