Mizoram is gearing up to host the inaugural Aizawl International Half Marathon this April, as announced in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on February 18. The MoU was signed between the Mizoram Sports & Youth Services Department and Innovations India Pvt. Ltd. at the Directorate of Sports & Youth Services, MINECO.
The MoU was formalized by Lalramsanga Sailo, Secretary of the Sports & Youth Services Department, and Capt. Rahul Bali from Innovations India Pvt. Ltd. The event will receive partial funding from the department, along with sponsorship support from Innovations India.
Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar highlighted the significance of the event, stating that the marathon would contribute to the state’s sports development, promote health and fitness, boost tourism, and aid in the fight against drug abuse. The event is expected to attract around 1,000 participants, and negotiations are ongoing with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for official recognition.
Capt. Rahul Bali emphasized that the marathon will provide a unique experience for participants, allowing them to explore Aizawl’s rich culture. The event will feature various race categories, including a 21.1 km half marathon, as well as 10 km and 5 km races. Registration fees will apply for all participants, except children.
The Aizawl International Half Marathon is set to become an annual event, with the MoU signed for an initial three-year term and the possibility of renewal. Mizoram’s Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh and Chief Minister Lalduhoma will serve as the chief patrons of the event.
