A strong call for an immediate, transparent, and time-bound roadmap for the resettlement of Manipur’s internally displaced families marked a Zero Hour intervention in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam warned that thousands of people continue to live in relief camps more than a year after the ethnic violence that began in May 2023.
Bimol Akoijam urged the Government to present a credible plan that ensures safe and dignified return for all displaced residents, stressing that such measures must be taken before the crisis enters its third year. Speaking in Manipuri, he said the prolonged displacement and the authorities’ handling of the situation had eroded public trust.
The MP alleged that security personnel had used excessive force against internally displaced persons during recent protests demanding rehabilitation, adding that such actions undermine efforts to reach a durable solution. He further claimed that the current situation appears to align with demands from certain Kuki groups opposing resettlement initiatives.
He accused individuals with “vested interests” of deliberately blocking the return of affected families and criticised what he described as governmental irresponsibility that allowed the humanitarian crisis to deepen. Bimol Akoijam pressed the Centre to adopt firm and transparent measures to ensure that displaced people can finally rebuild their lives without further delay.
