Agartala, December 17, 2025: Tripura MP Rajib Bhattacharjee raised a strong appeal in the Rajya Sabha, urging the Centre to grant Geographical Indication (GI) tags to a range of organic fruits and agricultural products cultivated in the state. Highlighting the potential for economic empowerment and sustainable development of tribal farmers in the hilly regions of Tripura, Bhattacharjee called for immediate attention to the matter.
Speaking in the Upper House, the MP praised the Centre’s ongoing efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to uplift the farming community. “The GI tag awarded to Tripura’s Queen Pineapple has brought international recognition and market prestige to our farmers,” he noted.
Bhattacharjee emphasized that Tripura’s agricultural diversity and organic farming heritage are unique in the country. He advocated for GI recognition of several indigenous crops, including Gandharaj lemon, brown rice, jackfruit, Kali Khasa, and Binni rice cultivated through the traditional jhum method.
“Granting GI tags to these products will not only enhance the global reputation of Tripura’s farmers but also strengthen their financial independence,” he asserted. He added that such recognition would inject new momentum into the agrarian economy of the state’s tribal-dominated regions.
