Nagaland: Athletics Federation Of India Adopts ‘Kohima Declaration’, Mandates SRY & DNA Tests

Kohima, April 16: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) concluded its Annual General Meeting in Kohima yesterday, adopting a series of landmark reforms aimed at strengthening athlete development and expanding athletics nationwide.

Among the key measures, the AFI approved mandatory SRY gene testing for national-level participation, with the federation bearing the cost. In addition, DNA profiling will be introduced for long-term athlete development, beginning with around 100 athletes.

AFI President and South Asian Athletics Federation chief Dr. Lalit K. Bhanot told reporters that the federation would provide technical support, coaching education, and guidance for academies in the Northeast, while stressing that infrastructure development remains the responsibility of the government.

The AGM also endorsed the “Kohima Declaration”, a commitment to nation-building through sports. The declaration pledges to expand athletics across India, restructure district bodies, and boost development in Nagaland and the Northeast through infrastructure, capacity building, and strategic support.
