Kohima, Mar 7: Nagaland Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change, C L John, today called for stronger collective action to address gender-based violence and unequal opportunities, identifying them as major barriers to women’s empowerment.

Speaking at the state-level International Women’s Day celebration in Kohima, themed “Rights, Justice, Action: For All Women and Girls”, John highlighted the sacrifices, struggles, and achievements of women across various sectors. The event was organized by the Department of Social Welfare, Nagaland, in partnership with the Nagaland State Commission for Women, Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Directorate of Women Resource Development, and Kohima Municipal Council.

John noted the growing presence of women in governance, pointing out two female members in the state assembly and one in the Rajya Sabha. He also paid tribute to Rano M Shaiza, Nagaland’s first woman MP, acknowledging her pioneering role in inspiring future leaders. He stressed that addressing gender-based violence is critical for ensuring a safe environment where girls can grow with confidence and opportunity.

Social Welfare Advisor Wangpang Konyak emphasized the importance of the 2026 theme in promoting actionable steps for women’s empowerment. He recognized the efforts of the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in supporting women since its inception, including the 2021 NSCW Awards that honored women achievers across sectors. Despite Nagaland being ranked among India’s safest states for women by the National Crime Records Bureau, Konyak noted an increase in crimes against women and girls and urged men to participate in ending such violence.

Keynote speaker, Social Welfare Secretary Limawabang Jamir, reported that the state’s One Stop Centre has handled over 1,800 cases of violence since 2016, many of which remain underreported due to social stigma. He outlined ongoing initiatives under Mission Shakti aimed at improving women’s safety and empowerment.

The event also recognized the achievements of Self Help Groups under the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, municipal and Anganwadi workers, and presented the NSCW Achievers Awards to outstanding contributors.
