Nagaland: Mon Wins Dr. T. Ao Trophy 2025 In Penalty Shootout Thriller

Kohima, August 16: In a heart-pounding finale that will be remembered for years, Mon district scripted history in front of over 28,000 roaring fans at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, edging out Niuland 5–4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after the teams battled to a 1–1 stalemate in regular time.

The grand finale of the Dr. T. Ao Trophy 2025 turned into an electrifying showdown of grit, passion, and nerves of steel. Mon’s journey to the title reached its pinnacle as goalkeeper Teihom Konyak, later named Golden Glove winner, pulled off a crucial save during the shootout, sending his team and their fans into wild celebrations. With this victory, Mon not only lifted the prestigious trophy but also walked away with a cash prize of total 5 lakh rupees while valiant runners-up Niuland took home 3 lakh rupees along with a trophy and citation each.

 

The tournament also saw some incredible individual brilliance. Best Defender was awarded to Thejangulie Zatsu (Kohima), Best Midfielder went to Sentilong (Mokokchung), Golden Glove (Best Goalkeeper) was claimed by Teihom Konyak (Mon), Golden Boot (Top Scorer) was secured by Ayanmongba (Tuensang) and Golden Ball (Player of the Tournament) was awarded to Kakhevi Assumi (Niuland)

Meanwhile, Mokokchung District will host the 25th edition of the Dr. T. Ao Trophy in 2026.
