Kohima, July 30: Lok Sabha Member of Parliament S Supongmeren Jamir has raised serious concerns over the degradation of India’s fragile mountain ecosystems and called for a comprehensive policy to safeguard them.
Speaking in the House on Wednesday, Jamir highlighted the environmental threats posed by climate change, deforestation, pollution, and water scarcity in mountainous regions, including the Himalayas. He stressed the need for a dedicated framework to protect ecologically sensitive areas spanning Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and all northeastern states.
Jamir stated that relying solely on modern technology is not enough to address the growing environmental crisis in these regions. He proposed the establishment of a specialized department or policy mechanism to ensure the preservation of mountain ecosystems while promoting equitable development.
The MP also urged the upcoming 16th Finance Commission to reconsider its population-based resource allocation model, pointing out that hilly regions with sparse populations often receive inadequate financial support despite facing significant ecological and developmental challenges.
