Nagaland’s Koridang constituency recorded the highest voter turnout in ongoing bypolls, with 59.52% of voters casting their ballots by 1 PM, according to data from the Election Commission. Tripura’s Dharmanagar seat reported 52.76% turnout by the same time.
In Karnataka, polling showed late momentum, with Bagalkot registering 43.75% and Davanagere South 37.17% turnout. Earlier at 11 AM, turnout figures were: Koridang 41.06%, Dharmanagar 33.51%, Bagalkot 27.83%, and Davanagere South 22.01%. Polling in these four constituencies across Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura began at 7 AM.
In Karnataka, the Congress party fielded Umesh Meti, son of the late leader HY Meti, for Bagalkot, and Samarth Mallikarjun, son of Minister SS Mallikarjun, for Davanagere South. The BJP candidates were Veerabhadrayya Charantimath (Bagalkot) and Srinivas T Dasakariyappa (Davanagere South). These seats became vacant following the deaths of HY Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
In Nagaland, Koridang (ST) saw Congress’s T Chalukumba AO, formerly of JD(U), contesting against BJP’s Daochier I Imchen, son of late veteran Imkong L Imchen. The Tripura Dharmanagar seat featured BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti facing Congress’s Chayan Bhattacharjee and CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta; the vacancy arose after the passing of Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen.
Meanwhile, the Ponda bypoll in Goa was cancelled by the Bombay High Court. Results for today’s bypolls, along with upcoming polls in Gujarat (Umreth) and Maharashtra (Rahuri, Baramati) on April 23, will be declared on May 4.
