Kohima, Feb 24: Police have arrested two men in connection with a racially charged assault on a third-year resident doctor from Nagaland at AIIMS Gorakhpur.
The doctor, specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology, was walking back to the campus from Orion Mall on Sunday evening when the accused followed her for over 1.5 km. Near Gate No. 2, close to the Army Camp, they hurled racial slurs and obscene remarks targeting her Northeastern origin. One of the men removed his shirt to intimidate her, while another allegedly slapped her buttocks, police said.
The arrested men, Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma from Deoria district, fled the scene after the doctor raised an alarm. A third suspect is still at large.
The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) condemned the attack on X, noting the victim’s “deep shock, humiliation, and trauma.” “As a doctor dedicated to women’s health, she was violated near her own institution,” the federation stated.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS, including 74 (assault to outrage modesty), 296(a) (obscene acts), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult).
