National Sports Day Celebrated At Manipur University With Spirit Of Unity And Fitness

Manipur University today observed National Sports Day with a grand celebration of sportsmanship and unity, organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell. The event, held at Dr. Kamal Indoor Stadium, Canchipur, was conducted under the national theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein”, launched by the Government of India.

The programme began with a floral tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, followed by various activities involving students, faculty, scholars, and volunteers.

Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Chairman of FICC and Dean of Students’ Welfare, attended as Special Guest, while Dr. Ch. Pradip Singh, Assistant Director of Sports, served as Guest of Honour. Prof. L. Thambal Singh, Head of PESS, presided over the function.

In his keynote address, Prof. M. Nodiachand Singh highlighted India’s untapped sporting potential and Manipur’s proud legacy of producing athletes of national and international repute. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lokendra Singh stressed the transformative role of sports in building a united and peaceful society, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and the Fit India Movement.

Speakers including Prof. Ibohal Singh, Dr. Pradip Singh, and Prof. Thambal Singh underlined the holistic benefits of sports, its role in fostering discipline, and its unifying spirit within communities.

As part of the celebration, a voluntary blood donation camp was also held, where students, NSS volunteers, and staff donated 30 units of blood, reflecting the spirit of service and solidarity.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. L. Pungdeng of the PESS Department. The celebration stood as a strong testament to sportsmanship, national pride, and unity on the occasion of National Sports Day.
